2009-2010 Madison Preschool Handbook
The Preschool Day
Arrival and Dismissal AM: Students riding the bus to school will be released from their bus at 7:40. Carpool children should wait until one of the Madison staff members “wave” them into the building. Carpool should pull up to drop-off area (closest to Pierce Road) before releasing child from car. Please remember that buses have the right of way during the drop-off procedure. All students must be in classrooms by 7:55 am. Children who arrive after 8:00 will be marked tardy. I will be standing at the entrance of the classroom every morning to greet your child.
Breakfast Release: If your child will be eating breakfast at school they will need to inform the bus driver that your child will need to be released from the bus by 7:35 and bring $1.00 for breakfast each morning.
The children will be dismissed at 10:20 from school. Pick up your child in front of the building (driveway closest to Pierce Road).
If your child is riding the bus we need to stress that you stay with your child until the bus picks them up and you need to be there when the bus drops them off. There will be an aide on the bus to and from your child's destination for Village Green and Arbors at Ironwood.
Arrival and Dismissal PM: Students can be dropped off no earlier than11:45. School begins at 11:50. If students arrive later they will be marked tardy. Drop off will take place in the front of the building. I will be standing at the front of the building when it is time for your child to enter the building. All PM students, who are riding in a car, will be dismissed at the back parking lot at the end of the day. Mrs. Copenhaver and I will be walking your child to the back parking lot.
Your child will only be released to the people you designate in your written request or on your child’s emergency card. If the school does not receive a note, we will send your child home on their regular school route.
Notes: Notes are required for the following reasons:
Early dismissal for appointments
If a different person will be picking your child up from school
Snack: The preschool schedule will have snack time. If you would be interested in helping provide a healthy snack please feel free to bring that item in. Healthy snack items are: crackers, juice, milk, apple sauce, fruit snacks, etc. (If your child has food allergies please notify me immediately).
Specials: Preschool students will participate in all of the special area classes.
For PE your child will need to bring in a pair of gym schools that will be kept in the classroom. Please put your child's name on them.
Daily Folders: Your child will bring a folder home each day with completed work and parent information. Take notice of the “communication log” located in the front pouch of your child’s folder. You will need to be sure and initial your child’s folder each night. Your child will receive a sticker or stamp each time they return their folder “signed”. Read, complete, and return appropriate papers in a timely manner. Papers included will be a glimpse of what your child is doing in school and help keep you “up-to-date” with which skills are being presented.
Homework: Your Preschool child will receive homework every week. On Monday, Wednesday, and Friday your child will be reading for at least 10 minutes a day. On Tuesday and Thursday your child will have an activity sheet that will need to be completed and turned in the next day. Some assignments are written while others are activities for your child to do orally or with materials at home. All written assignments have a page in the packet for your child to complete the work. Please plan to spend 10-15 minutes that night doing homework with your child.
In order to complete the homework, your child will need these materials at home:
Paper (any kind)
Newsletters: A preschool newsletter will be sent home at the end of each week. It will contain information about school events and important reminders. I will also have a website that I will be updating with newsletters and notes. Here is my website address: http://staff.phmschools.org/sbmartin
Dressing for School: Please dress your child in comfortable clothing for school. It is best to dress children in “play” clothes instead of “dress” clothes since some activities require children to paint, sit on the floor, play in sand or water, or play outside. In cold weather, please dress your child accordingly since we may go outside to play or for a short walk on the school grounds. Because we do many physical activities during the day it is recommended that clogs, high-heels and sandals without backs are not part of your child’s every day wear. Please remember that flip-flop sandals are inappropriate footwear according to the PHM dress code.
Medications: The school nurse will administer all medications. Please contact the nurse if your child is to be given any medicine during school hours. If your child has asthma, you may want to consider leaving a spare inhaler with the nurse. Do not send medicine to school in your child’s book bag. This includes cough drops or “sore throat lollipops”.
Bring: Please bring in an extra pair of clothes for your child in a ziplock bag labeled with their name. Items in the bag should be (Underwear, pants, shirt
Can You Lend A Hand???? Volunteers are very important to the preschool program. If you can volunteer please let me know on the questionnaire form. There are many tasks for volunteers and I will try to find one that best fits your needs.
There are volunteer sheet to be completed in the big school packet which will be returned to me.
Birthdays: Children may celebrate their birthdays in school. We can no longer have you bring in a sweet treat such as: cupcakes or cookies. PHM implements the wellness criteria of healthy items such as: fruit, vegetables, cheese, crackers, and etc. If you do not plan to bring a wellness food item we will still have a celebration and snack for the children. Please let me know ahead of time if you plan to celebrate your child’s birthday at school.
